Do Three Common Deer Myths Hold Up?

Not in the data I found. Pennsylvania's doe data found no relationship between the rut and the moon. About 50 GPS bucks in Mississippi didn't shift when they moved once hunting started, and Mississippi State says a buck may use 10 or more bedding areas in a month.

Myth 1: the rutting moon

WherePennsylvaniaSample3,507 road-killed does with fetusesWhen1999-2006
What they did

The Pennsylvania Game Commission checked road-killed does with fetuses, which give the date each doe was bred, and compared those dates with the moon.

What they found
  • The researcher's words: "There is no relationship between the rut and the moon."
Limits
  • This tests when the rut happens, not daily deer movement.
  • A research blog post, not a paper.

Myth 2: bucks go nocturnal when hunting starts

WhereMadison and Yazoo counties, MississippiSampleAbout 50 bucks, GPS, a location every 15 minutes
What they did

Tracked bucks during hunting season to see if they moved at different times of day.

What they found
  • The researchers: "We did not detect a temporal shift in buck movement during hunting season."
  • The bucks still moved most around sunrise and sunset.
  • They did tend to avoid areas hunters visited a lot.
Limits
  • A university news article, undated, with no paper named.
  • Other studies under heavy hunting pressure may differ. This is one study.

Myth 3: a buck has one bed

WhereMississippiSampleMore than 40 bucks aged 2 and older, GPS
What they did

Put GPS collars on bucks and followed where they bedded.

What they found
  • Mississippi State: "A buck may use 10 or more bedding areas in a single month."
Limits
  • An Extension news story, not the paper itself.

MY READMy tactic, not a study result

The scariest thing in the woods is a plan built on myths.

03Field notes

  1. Don't plan your rut days around the moon. Pennsylvania's doe data found no relationship.
  2. Don't write off daylight once hunting starts. The Mississippi bucks still moved most around sunrise and sunset.
  3. Don't count on one bed. A buck may use 10 or more bedding areas in a month.
  4. Check your own state's season dates and legal hours with your state wildlife agency.
